Eco Luxury Camps and Lodges in the World

Where you’ll stay for a dream eco-vacation

Eco-Luxury

The term ‘Eco-luxury’ refers to the ‘production process’ of economic activities that simultaneously promote a sustainable economy and high quality standards. We have already outlined the general concept of sustainability. When we speak of ‘high quality’ in the tourism sector, we refer to constantly-evolving projects that aim at improving customer services, accommodation, architectural style and catering and offer special activities and ‘extras’ such as spas, transportation, shops, libraries and so on in order to provide luxury and ensure high levels of satisfaction. We are not thinking of ‘luxury’ as a ‘superfluous’ or merely expensive commodity but use the term more in the sense of the original Latin word luxus, once used to indicate an object that was more beautiful or precious than others and would stimulate admiration and appreciation. Luxury Camps & Lodges of the World

The aim of Luxury Camps & Lodges of the World (LCL World) is to promote tourism enterprises that aim at combining the concepts of sustainable economics and high quality. But what does ‘sustainable tourism’ mean? According to Herman Daly (World Bank): “New theories concerning sustainable development and ecological economics introduce a new paradigm, in which the economy is no longer based on the two parameters of ‘work’ and ‘capital’ but in which we have an ecological economy that recognizes the existence of three parameters: work, ‘natural capital’ and the ‘capital produced by mankind’.” And if by ‘natural capital’ we refer to natural systems (seas, rivers, lakes, forests, fauna, flora) and also agricultural products, seafood, game captured by hunters and the cultural and artistic heritage of a territory, we can easily understand the fundamental importance of investing in such matters. SABI SABI: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

The Sabi Sabi philosophy of ‘yesterday, today and tomorrow’ stems from over 100 years of safari experience; a history richly woven into the atmosphere of each private game lodge. South Africa and its warm hospitality echo through the style of every one.
Sabi Sabi’s philosophy is based on two main principles:
* The first is the need to conserve rapidly dwindling areas and to provide a sanctuary for fauna and flora as part of South Africa’s heritage.
* The second is the belief that the business must be a true example of eco-tourism effectively linking tourism with conservation and the community. Sabi Sabi’s environmental management system is a holistic one, where the ecological needs are balanced with the needs of people and their communities, i.e. focussing on the interdependence of tourism, conservation and local communities.

Gorilla Forest Camp is a permanent luxury tented camp nestled in the mountainous and mist-swathed rainforests of Bwindi National Park. Guest accomodation is in eight large tents, each with en-suite facilities and a separate bathroom with a bathtub looking out onto the forest itself. Each tent has a large wooden deck where guests can relax, enjoy meals and absorb the exotic mystery of the rainforest that provided the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Jungle Book. From this comfortable and indeed unique base guests can trek into the forest accompanied by a ranger and observe the gentle mountain gorilla in their remote forest habitat.

Sabi Sabi Selati Camp: experience the Africa of yesterday

A stay at the intimate and secluded Selati Camp is an experience any guest will treasure . Meticulously conceived on the outside as a genuine bush house, on the inside, all the suites are furnished in the refined style of a bygone 19th Century railway company. In fact, a remote branch of what was then known as the Selati Line actually crossed the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, the ballast of which is still visible close to the camp to this very day. The railway theme is apparent in the main room of the camp, the latter filled with intriguing antique paraphernalia such as locomotive name plates and signals. The rooms and corridors continue the theme, displaying all sorts of railway lamps and old fashioned ornaments, some of which are now collectors items. Accommodation at the Selati Camp is the very height of sumptuousness and grace. Eight luxurious suites, each one blending harmoniously into its natural surroundings possesses a thatched roof, an en suite bathroom and an open air shower.

Morgan’s Rock Hacienda & Ecolodge

Morgan’s Rock, located on the southern Pacific coast of Nicaragua, is the result of a project aimed at safeguarding the environment and developing the local economy. More specifically, the ‘hacienda’, a 1,800-hectare property immersed in tropical forest and bordered by pure white beaches, where turtles come to lay their eggs, is situated to the north of San Juan del Sur close to the Costa Rican border and just to the south of the old colonial centre of Granada. Created in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment, the 15 refined, wooden bungalows at Morgan’s Rock were constructed by local artisans and arranged so as to ensure privacy and a very peaceful stay. Luxuriously equipped with extra-large beds, comfortable sofa-beds, a private terrace/deck and wooden internal décor elements and fittings, the apartments are all linked to the central lodge by means of a 110-m suspension bridge that crosses a forested canyon. The hacienda and its private reserve offers a wide range of activities and excursions including guided explorations to allow visitors to discover the many types of plants and birds that live in this area, trips across Lake Nicaragua, kayaking, butterfly tours and cultural visits with guides to nearby villages.

Yacutinga Lodge: in harmony with nature

The Yacutinga eco-tourism lodge, located close to the Iguazú River in the Misiones Forest, is a unique resort in Argentina. The lodge aims to offer guests a relaxed atmosphere in a man-made structure in perfect harmony with nature adapted to the sloping surfaces of the terrain. It was constructed using local materials, such as stone, tree trunks or timber from fallen trees to ensure they generate a sense of total integration with the surrounding environment. The five bungalows located in the forest are composed of four rustic-style rooms and are furnished with large beds and a private bathroom. During the winter (June-August), when the climate gets colder, a wood chimney heats the rooms. The main building contains the bar on the terrace, the reception and a restaurant, which offers views across the palm grove. Visitors to the lodge can take part in a wide variety of activities, such as guided walks, the planting of indigenous trees, the observation and identification of typical woodland animal species and awareness-raising sessions relating to natural processes, all of which allow the guests to acquire a deeper understanding of the forest.
